With trees, lakes and expansive views, motorcyclists love heading to the north country around Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, for a day, weekend jaunt or one of many scheduled events held throughout the summer and fall. The main highways, 10, 59 and 34, offer a great ride and easy access to plenty of restaurants, bars & grilles, and activities to break up the journey. And, enjoy a ride along Detroit Lakes’ West Lake Drive to take in a mile of beach and warm lake breezes.
There are also plenty of county highways with tight, manageable curves, scenic views and friendly businesses with food and drink to make it worthwhile to explore less-traveled roads. Head 30 miles north to Waubun and take State Hwy 113 east to Itasca State Park for an excursion with stately pine trees, lots of curves and less traffic. Head south and take a side trip off Hwy 59 to 17 to check out the scenery on the way to Vergas. Make a 100-mile loop east and south to Otter Tail and Pelican Lakes for a rural tour of corn and soybean fields, hardwood forests and shimmering lakes.
